Skills Upgrade

A place to list and work on skills that need improvement.

Version control

• Seems like git + github is the way to go
• Git for the lazy - excellent intro guide, but single user only

Web frameworks

• Need to learn either Rails or Django by coding a simple project
• If continuing to use PHP, need to code in the OO style

Javascript + XUL

• Need better understanding for Firefox extensions and Web2.0 apps
• Should learn at least one js library: prototype, scriptaculous, jquery

R + multivariate statistics

• Grasp of R basics is good, but need better "at fingertips" facility
• Would also benefit from more general statistics knowledge - good web tutorials?

Google technologies

• My FriendFeed comment - "Strikes me that anyone interested in how to handle large datasets should be looking to the people who do it best"
• GFS, BigTable, MapReduce, AppEngine

Next generation sequencing

• Need to understand the technology, the data generated and the tools to process the data - a practical approach

SNPs: mapping, association studies

• Should read a basic review article on SNP association studies and statistics.

Microarrays - especially Affymetrix

• Just need an idea of commonly-used software; Bioconductor?
